An afternoon thunderstorm rolled through today with the noise of an old 19th century steam engine crossing a wooden bridge. It was a sight to see...lots of lightening sketching the outlines of the dark nimbus clouds that were hurling their saturated burden to the ground like so many wild eyed children in a massive water balloon war. The wind twisting and lashing the trees with the overspray...and i sat on the back porch soaking in the swirling misty intoxication of it all.
As the chaotic nebulous horde ran away to play elsewhere the world quieted. The air smelled of the familiar comfort of green humid warmth, like walking down-breeze of a sycamore...and then...i heard something...almost imperceptible but growing...an erratic, high pitched whir of sound...and it presented itself in the form of a hummingbird...and then another...and another. They were all bellying up to the feeder i had put out a week or so ago, and like good bar patrons they returned time after time. By the time i came in i had i.d.'d four different ones 2 males, 2 chix...and even The X was getting in to watching them and would point to them when they came in for another round. I'll get some pics soon but for now you should watch this...they're just so freaking cool...just watching the vid is relaxing...
It reminded me of a part of a movie The Queen and i watched the other night which i HIGHLY recommend...The Curious Case of Benjamin Button...can't say much about it other than...get it, watch it, report back. For us it was very...introspective.
Anyhoo, that's my post and i'm stickin to it...hat tip to Lex for the reminder and fodder for today...

Remind me to tell you about Bo's rock store when he was a kid. He made a sign for his store which listed out all that you could buy, and it ended with this, "And you can watch hummin birds free."
I've NEVER seen hummingbirds approach humans like this... ever. And the swarm of 'em around mid-point in the vid! Wow! I am amazed.
About watching t-storms roll in from the porch/patio: one of life's greatest little pleasures. I've done the same in various places throughout my life, most recently under the awning of El Casa Móvil De Pennington from time to time. But the occurrence of storms without wind in these parts is rare, thus limiting my opportunities. Ya takes what ya can get!
MamaLou...oooooh i wanna hear THAT one.
Uncle Buck: Cool huh? It is rare but those summer storms you can watch from the porch are just too cool not too write about.
