Dishwashers...

Of all the appliances we have in our home, there is none more pointless, yea, useless, than our dishwasher. It's taking up valuable cabinet space i could use for...say...chip clips, or wine coasters.

First of all, in order for the "dishwasher" to get anything clean, you have to put it in there...clean. So, my thought is, why not go ahead and add a little Dawn and only touch them twice (once to wash/rinse, once to dry/put away)instead of 3 or 4X (rinse, put in, take out, dry anyway, and sometimes RE-wash). Come to find out...i'm not the only one like this.

Case in point, took a roadie last week down to my brother's house. They knew we were coming but we were a few minutes early (like 180 minutes) and there were inevitably some dishes to be taken care of. So he scrambles trying to get the kitchen cleaned up. He's running some hot, soapy dishwater and i'm thinking, "well, shoot, i might as well give him a hand." So i offer and he declines with, "No, i'll get it..." i stand there watching him wash each dish and then wonder of wonders, LOADS THEM DIRECTLY INTO THE DISHWASHER. I did one of those classic Boudicca *blink*s (actually it was more like a couple). Thinking, "Dude, if you're gonna go THAT far...". But hey, its not my domain so...

But the point is...he had to clean their dishes to put them in the dishwasher too! I mean, what's the freaking POINT? I kinda take the Tim Allen approach to dishwashers...If i can't put a two day old crusted chili bowl in there and have it come out pure and undefiled...i may need to "rewire it".

I definitely agree with your dishwasher point. Why wash the dishes twice? But i don't like to put away the dishes. If they are in the dishwasher I don't have to put them away until later. ;)

The three things I miss MOST about my former (conventional) life: my washer, my dryer, and my dishwasher. Yeah, dishwashers suck at doing pots and pans... that's a given, and I rarely used mine for that, if at all. But "regular" dishes? Give 'em a rinse, toss 'em in, achieve "full load" status and run.

Dang, I miss being able to do that...

I have a love/hate relationship with dishwashers. On the one hand, I hate dishwashers for all the reasons you mentioned. I really hate to unload them. On the other hand, after a large group, it is sure easy to put the dishes in the washer and forget them. It never hurts to leave them in there for a while either. And supposedly, you can buy dishwashers that work plus they are suppose to get hot enough to sterilize the dishes which is better than hand washing them. I have seen dishwashers that are small - like trash-compactor size. These seem ideal and economical. Since I don't have a dishwasher, I kind of miss it these days.

I've never had one, so I don't know what to miss. From the logics written here, I am inclined to agree with the piper. I'd rather have the storage cause I'm always buying cool kitchen gadgets that need a place to lodge.
When us girls were home, my dad always resisted the onslaught of begs for a dishwasher following most meals by firmly shaking his head and laughing as he spoke these famous words- "No thanks, I have four really nice looking dishwashers already!"

Interesting points all. Yet, one fact remains...when using a dishwasher...one must handle the dishes extra times, thus killing the time saving element that the dishwasher purports. I agree with MamaLou that it is much easier to load up when there is a LARGE amount...but then the risk is run of overload and one either must entirely re-wash or at least towel dry most of the top rack.

Uncle Buck, from a fellow ex-FTRV'r it could be that i am what i am because of the dishes to do in the RV life.

D2D writes almost prophetically here, i can see this scenario playing out in the Kingdom in the not-too-distant-future.
