Avast!

So Saturday was a pretty big day...and kinda caught me unawares. It all began when...(queue harp roll)

I'm standing here at the computer early that morning just checking all the routine stuff. HRH staggers sleepily out of her room and over to me, hugs my leg and then darts off to her room. She returns with a home made blue construction paper envelope, with the words 'My Daddy' on it...uh oh...i can already feel some kinda pull developing in my throat, so i open it up... and sure enough...another piece of construction paper folded like a card. I open it up and there's a picture drawn of a little stick person in a dress with long hair holding hands with a big stick person with spiky hair (that would be me). That strain in my throat tightened and something was blurring my vision. I scooped her up and held her tightly..."I love you Daddy"...buttah...that would be me...buttah. She got down and looked up..."Do you have a Valentine for me?"

"Ummmm...not yet."

Fast forward about 30 minutes and The Prosecutor reproduces the entire event...so as you would guess...me the heartless shoat that i am...i hadn't gotten them a card...but i wouldn't dare let them know it.

I did somewhat alleviate the pressure by making them all a classic pancake breakfast wherein i cut theirs out with a large heart shaped cookie cutter and slathered them with real maple syrup. I gave The Queen all the cut out pancakes with a heart shaped hole hoping the message would be clear...'my heart is empty without you'...ok well that's just a easy way to say...i didn't get you a card, but we could stay at a Holiday Inn tonight.

After that we all loaded up and went to our local family fat donation facility and bent, or at least tried in my case, our bodies into shapes that are inhuman and ridiculously difficult...no wonder yoga poses are all called either after animals, plants, or various other inanimate objects...down dog, tree, eagle, and the real killers...revolved half moon, side plank, and airplane (aka warrior III)...but hey, we are strengthening core muscles that OBVIOUSLY...DESPERATELY...need it.

When that 2-3X a week grueling event was over, we came home and made ready for the real treat...a trip to Norman and obviously to Red Robin for the Royals Valentime's Day prize. As parents, we had finally mended the tattered shreds of confidence our children had in us regarding the day...since we had BOTH received cards and neither of us had anything to give in return...and Honey had sent them all cards all the way from sunny CO...WITH heart shaped $$$. Yeah...thanks for the heat there Honey...but really, that WAS pretty cool and VERY thoughtful...they L-O-V-E-D it!

RR is always fun. How do you go wrong with burgers, balloons, and...beer...oh well...two outta three ain't bad. We did have one last trick up our sleeve for the coup de grace.

TARGET.

We ALL love TARGET.

The Elder Statesman always gives me a ration when i tell him i'm going to Devil Mart. I really do despise that place. But, if we had a TARGET anywhere close, you'd NEVER catch me anywhere NEAR the Mart.

Here's where it really got fun...we had decided that we would let them each choose a new tub toy since we finally had to 86 the old ones...its a bit early in the homeschooling process to begin chemistry or biology and there were...things...living and reproducing inside the old tub toys. But...by the time we actually made it to the tub toy aisle HRH already had a Barbie on a bike zeroed, and a tub toy wasn't going to sway a fashionable five year old girl with a dollhouse full of Barbies already... i didn't really want my public opinion polls to fall even further among the four and five year old demographic so i acquiesced. They both got new Barbies, The Prosecutor locked on to Surfer Barbie...they wanted the Surfer Ken...but he looked like he really wasn't into girls that much.

The Prince came strong. He found a box full of pirate tub toys in his crosshairs. "Daddy! PIWATES! I WAN THE PIWATES!"

"These?"

"YEAH...THOSE PIWATES!"

"Those are pretty cool." as i handed him the box of six Pirate tub toy figures...complete with cannon. Eyes sparkling, he took it like i had given him a bag full of 16th century Spanish golden medallions, and then...he gave me a hearty...

"ARRRRRRRGH!"

My eyes sparkled at that one. YEAH BABY!!! ARRRRRRRGH!

He carried that large box of pirate toys all over that store...and it was a SuperTarget. He sat with it at his feet all the way home. He carried it to bed with him. And Sunday morning he brought it sleepily out with him where with we promptly opened it...and gave me another "Yo Ho!"

The Queen snuck in a card for me in the trip...great...i thought we had an unwritten rule...it was laying on my pillow...great...i feel REALLY cool now...and it was one of those serious cards, you know, with all those little truths about us...it was very very cool...and i was very very not. So i closed the card, looked at the back of it, and then looked at her smiling at me...and said..."What...no money?"

AVAST! DRINK UP ME HEARTIES....YO HO!

Hoist The Colors - Pirates of The Caribbean 3 OST Music and Lyrics

Hoist The Colors - Pirates of The Caribbean 3 OST
The king and his men
stole the queen from her bed
and bound her in her Bones.
The seas be ours
and by the powers
where we will well roam.

Yo, ho, haul together,
hoist the colors high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars,
never say we die.

Some men have died
and some are alive
and others sail on the sea
– with the keys to the cage...
and the Devil to pay
we lay to Fiddler's Green!

The bell has been raised
from it's watery grave...
Do you hear it's sepulchral tone?
We are a call to all,
pay head the squall
and turn your sail toward home!

Yo, ho, haul together,
hoist the colors high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars,
never shall we die.

Without a word from Bo and Sara, GBN1 understood all about "I love you Day." Crewcraw and I took them each an 88 cent balloon and they were thrilled. I'm thinking you were overly guilt ridden and set your standards a bit high. Still, it sounds like a great day.

The day sounds like it ended up quite happily, so "hearts" to you - and just be ready with a surprise shamrock for The Queen ! Glad the grandbabies enjoyed getting mail -
Love, Honey and Papa

Sounds like a stupendous day! Hand-made Valentines are the best, IMHO... and you scored twice! Too cool.

Don't feel bad, Jay. I never got my kids valentines, either. But there's a bit of difference between boy-chillun and girls, methinks.

Verification word: "upeni." Well, yeah... I am!

Mine are a little too old to be sending valentines. But the wife & I did manage to clear the house and make room for some take-out Chinese and a movie (in our living room). Not a bad Valentine's Day night out (in). And no crowds to fight with.
